About Me

Wuddup world! Alanna here – aka The Budget Babes. I’m sure you’re wondering who the heck I am. So allow myself to introduce…..myself.

I’m just an average 30-year-old small town gal from Peterborough, Ontario who is living in the big city of Toronto. I do not work in the financial industry, but I do happen to understand the basics of budgeting and investing. I’m sure you’re wondering how I know this? Let me explain…

In December of 2015, I quit my job, got rid of my apartment, and left the big city to go on a 6-month adventure of a lifetime. I started in the depths of the Amazonian rainforest in Brazil, partied in the streets of Rio de Janeiro for Carnival, hopped over to Paraguay for some delicious BBQed food, went horseback riding in Uruguay, traveled around Argentina in a camper van, hiked in Patagonia, checked out the wineries of Chile, and then flew over to Southeast Asia for 3 more months of adventure. I hit up Thailand for the full moon party, got Scuba certified on the island of Koh Tao, watched the beautiful sunset on the island of Koh Pi Pi, dove into the hippie culture up in Pai, and then flew to Indonesia where I spent time with the Orangutans in the Sumatran jungle, learned how to surf in Bali, and then dove with sharks and turtles on the island of Gili T. And I did all of this while being jobless. The whole darn tootin’ time.

A majority of the people that I have talked to who do this kind of travelling come home broke or in some serious credit card debt. But not me! I came back with enough money in the bank to move back to Toronto and continued to live my wonderful (not extravagant) life in one of the most expensive cities in Canada.

Well…I seem to have a gift. And it is a gift that we would like to share with YOU!

I just happen to be damn good at budgeting and understanding the basics of investing and personal finance. After talking to friends, strangers, relatives, teachers, financial industry professionals, the neighbourhood dog, police officers, producers, etc., I realized that there was a lack of information surrounding the world of money. And it’s funny because it’s something that everyone uses every freakin’ day. Why don’t they teach this in school you ask? Because we are all too busy learning about Shakespeare, geometric shapes, and memorizing the periodic table. Duh.

So, I decided to create this cool and fun blog that will hopefully do the following:

  • Provide you with easy to understand resources and definitions that will simplify financial and investment terms that tend to make our mouths gape. I want you to build your confidence so when you walk into the bank to talk to a financial advisor, you’ll finally have some kind of idea of what they’re talking about and what to look out for.
  • Give you tips and tricks on how to save money with different products that I use on a day to day basis.
  • Change your perspective on how you use money. In order to start saving, you’ll need to change some things around in your life. This takes diligence and will-power. It’s not difficult to do, you just need some guidance and I’m here to guide you. I want your money to start working for you, instead of you working so darn hard for your money. Think of me as a personal trainer….but for your bank account.

So dive in, explore the site, and reach out to me if you need anything!
